Coronavirus Update

Last update: 16 March, 2020

As the news about the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve and some major events are being cancelled or postponed in Europe, we want to update you that preparations for CHEST Congress 2020 in Bologna are ongoing.

As the congress organizers, the safety and health of all those attending is our main concern and we are monitoring the situation very closely.

We are following the recommendations of the World Health Organization as well as those of the local health authorities in Italy.

We currently anticipate that we will decide whether to postpone the event, or continue as planned, in early April.

We recommend attendees to book their flights and accommodation with cancellation insurance.

We will continue to advise accordingly and provide related updates on the congress website and to all of our faculty, industry partners and participants.

It is our hope that the COVID-19 virus will be contained as soon as possible, and our thoughts go out to those families that have been affected.

Telephone Services

It is mandatory to dial the area code (see below) EVEN IF you are dialing a local number. All area codes start with “0” except those for cell phones, which never have a “0” and usually start with “3”.
Emergency calls. The Italian equivalent of 911 is 113. Theoretically, there should be an English-speaking person available whenever you dial this number. But remember, it’s for emergencies, not for information.
Long distance calls  between major cities can be dialed directly on the public telephone by using the proper area code number. Calls to almost all foreign countries can be dialed directly (dial 0 + country code + area code + phone number).

Visas

Visa regulations vary based on nationality and country of origin. Visa requirements are determined by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Please note due to the complex nature of visa requirements, the Congress organizers are unable to respond to visa-related inquiries. We recommend contacting the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country.
VISA PROCESSING TIME
The processing period for visa issuance may vary between different visa applications. Visa applicants are therefore reminded to apply early for their visa, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Invitation Letters

An official personalized letter of invitation will be provided to registered participants as part of the registration procedure.  This invitation is prepared solely for the purpose of visa applications and is not a commitment on the part of the organizers to provide any financial support or confirmation of inclusion in the Scientific Program.
Invitation letters can be provided electronically (PDF) or as a hard copy if required.  Hard copies will be mailed via regular post free of charge.  In case of special delivery (courier) request, the participant will be responsible for all charges.

Liability and Insurance

Please do not leave bags or suitcases unattended at any time, whether inside or outside the session halls. Hotels strongly recommend that you use their safety deposit boxes for your valuables.

Climate

The average minimum temperature (usually the minimum temperature is noted during the night) in Bologna in June is 14.0°C (57.2°F). The amount of rain in June is normal with an average of 55mm (2.2in). The average maximum temperature lies around 27.0°C (80.6°F). If you enjoy looking at a blue sky and like sunbathing than this month is a great period to visit Bologna. It has 305 hours of sun.
So, what to wear in June? Visitors traveling to Bologna should plan on bringing a totally waterproof rain jacket since it will be raining some days. Also bring your shorts and or a skirt because it can be very warm or even hot.

Water

Though tested safe for drinking, the water in Bologna and the province is very hard and contains high levels of calcium and chlorine.  The water may also have an odor or a foul taste.  For people with sensitivities, it is recommended to drink bottled water.
A cheap alternative to bottled water runs from public water fountains that can be found in all towns and villages. This water is free, tasteless, drinkable (potabile) and readily available from marked water posts everywhere. And it is safe for tourists to stop and take a drink or fill up their drinking bottles from these fountains instead of carrying bottled water around.

Electricity

In Italy the power plugs and sockets are of type F and L. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
